This episode is part 2 of a 2-part series with the AP English Language students in the Academy of Literature, Media, and Arts (ALMA) at Hoover High School. Students read the memoir Crazy Brave by Joy Harjo and made connections between beautifully written and vivid stories recalled in the memoir to the wide topic of social norms including gender norms, toxic masculinity, body positivity, intergenerational trauma, and violence prevention. These students also include great calls to action for both young people and adults to work toward Healthy Relationships in our fight to prevent violence.

Join SDYR as we head back to Hoover High for a two-part series featuring the ALMA Academy who read the memoir Crazy Brave by Joy Harjo. Students made connections between Harjo's beautifully written stories to their own personal experiences with family dynamics, consent and boundaries, and healing. These students also include some great healthy relationship calls to action for both young people and adults.

Crawford High School students from the FACES for the future program developed a healthy relationship survey they shared with their community, and discussed the responses as well as interviewing Karla Sanchez, CCS Therapist about her profession and her opinion on relationships. This episode also provides resources and examples on how to practice healthy communication in a relationships, with friends family, or partners.

This podcast is created by youth in San Diego County, California who are supported by the prevention team at Center for Community Solutions (CCS). This project was funded by NBC Universal and is intended to promote violence prevention, start conversations with youth and their loved ones, and help youth build healthy, safe communities.
CCS is a San Diego-based nonprofit organization dedicated to ending relationship and sexual violence for more information please go to ccssd.org
For the last 5 years the CCS Prevention team has been working with the California Public Health Department to implement the Close to Home model in City Heights. Close to Home engages whole communities in designing solutions and leading social change for domestic and sexual violence prevention.
One component of Close to Home is the Youth Leadership Team (YLT) who worked to develop the ideas, intros and education in this podcast.
